Gerard Healy

Trainer

Why did you become a PT?
I always had a desire to work in a profession where I enjoyed what I did. I grew up playing sport in the country and going to the local gym while also spending time coaching sport particularly basketball, and enjoyed helping people become better and develop. The Personal Training / Health Industry offers a lot of the same qualities.

What is your fitness education background?
After completing year 12, I went to university to study Myotherapy. During my studies I found my interests becoming stronger and stronger in the field of Personal training. I then came to the point that I deferred out to study Certificate 3 and 4 in fitness. That was 7 years ago.

Since then I have completed further qualifications in Spin Class Instruction, Outdoor Group Training, Exercise Nutrition, Boxing and Kickboxing and also gained my Qualification as a  Sports Trainer and Massage Therapist.

What is your PT work background and experience?
Since completing my Personal Training Qualifications I have found it has opened many doors, and I have had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of roles. I have worked in the retail industry selling exercise equipment for home and commercial use, I have worked in nearly every role possible in a health club from the front desk, to a gym floor instructor, to personal trainer and even the group exercise co-ordinator. I currently own and manage 2 Genesis Health Clubs. I have also had opportunities to present as a public speaker for local community events and for corporate businesses and have operated my own personal training business.

What interests do you have away from work?
I play local football on the weekend, I love having a kick with my mates at Woori Yallock, and I also like to try and be a bit of a handy man and attempt to renovate houses with my partner Amy on the weekends (a work in progress…)

Most inspirational & admired individual and why?
In an obvious choice I would say my parents. I grew up in an environment where we didn’t have much, but my parents made extraordinary sacrifices to ensure I am where I am today.

What are you future career aspirations?
I hope to continue to learn and grow in our great industry and help pass on the knowledge I learn, to others.

Why did you choose to work for Genesis?
I chose to work for Genesis Fitness as it was a business that provided a career path to trainers and staff. I started at Genesis St Kilda Rd as a Personal Trainer and worked my way up to Managing the club and ultimately purchasing a partnership in the business. We have now purchased a second Genesis Fitness club on Flinders St.  There are not many health clubs around who provide the sort of opportunities to staff like Genesis Fitness does.

What are the common issues you experience with clients?
Lack of time, weight loss and stress. As a health club owner I literally have thousands of clients. The common thing I find is they all live very busy lifestyles and find it hard to find time to fit in exercise. It’s a very common trend and a growing problem in society.

Today people are working longer and more stressful hours than ever before and this continues to grow. The technology of today means we are seated most of the time or are in jobs where machines complete most of the tasks. Most people now would drive to a shopping centre, park the car and take the lift to the shops,  50 years ago you would have walked an hour to the store and walked up the steps to the door, then carried the groceries home.

I see most client’s common issues are they suffer from living day to day lives in an environment their bodies are not use to or built for.  With the information we now know through Paul’s philosophies and Effective Movement Training it is important we design training routines when people come into our clubs they can not only achieve sustainable results, but also function better, move more freely and most importantly they are pain free.
